Mother's Day gadgets

With Mother's Day on May 10, check out this list of hot ideas to keep Mum plugged in.

DIGITAL PICTURE SHOW

It's said that women are the family history keepers, so a digital photo frame might be a fitting gift. Kodak has released two new models, including this 8in frame with touch-sensitive controls. The EasyShare M820 lets you control its display with a row of touch-friendly lights along its frame, so you don't smudge the screen with fingerprints. This miniature cinema can play slideshows with music, thanks to its speakers, or short videos. It has 128MB of internal memory and it also supports most memory card formats with two slots.

HANDBAG CAM.

Small enough to carry in a handbag, this highly portable video camera is also powerful enough to record important moments for posterity. The Sanyo Xacti CG10EX video camera features a pistol-style grip that fits snugly into your palm and will capture video in 720p high-definition and at 30 frames per second. The tiny 10-megapixel shooter also has a 5x optical zoom for close-ups, a 3in LCD screen that acts as its viewfinder and the ability to snap still photos as you capture video footage. Both are recorded to SD or SDHC memory cards to save on space.

CRYSTAL USB NECKLACE.

Following in the footsteps of Philips' Swarovski-toting USB jewellery, The Funky Company has launched a range of crystal necklaces with digital storage in the centre. The heart-shaped pendants come in two styles – one with half a heart covered in round diamantes, the other with a faceted crystal – and both are suspended from silver chains. They are a little heavier than some jewellery, at 56g, and may require a USB cord for connection, but they are PC and Mac compatible and could be very handy in a digital crisis.

HOT FOOTING IT.

These warm slippers might not be technologically advanced – you won't find an actual heating element in their soles and they don't need charging – but the low-key technology involved in Luxury Heatable Slippies could win over your mother this winter. These furry slippers are packed with wheat grains and, with the use of a microwave oven, can be heated to joint-warming perfection. The slippers require 90 seconds of heating in an 850 watt oven and come in one size and two colours: purple and pink.

DESIGNER PHONE.

The devil might wear Prada and so might the Pope. Your mother can join them with this updated take on the Prada Phone by LG, which hides several important high-tech enhancements. The most obvious addition is a metal QWERTY keyboard that slides from beneath the phone and makes SMS messaging so much easier. Its other improvements are just as important though, and include 3.5G and wireless internet connectivity, a web browser, video calling and a five-megapixel camera with Schneider-Kreuznach lens. It's available from Crazy Johns and Virgin Mobile.

CORDLESS PHONES

Mobile phones are not the only communication hubs around, nor are they the only technology to undergo advances. Uniden's limited edition Elite 9036+1 cordless home phones are wi-fi friendly to avoid interference, come with polyphonic ringtones, an integrated answering machine, are caller ID-compatible, feature extra loud handset volume, and store up to 100 phone numbers. These two handsets also come with an elegant glossy white finish and buttons that glow pink. Uniden will also donate $10 from each purchase to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

BABY MONITOR

New members of the Mother's Day crowd might appreciate this advanced new baby monitor from Philips. The top-of-the-range Philips DECT AVENT 530 baby monitor not only offers interference-free reception, by scanning 100 channels for the best transmission, but it can play lullabies to your infant and has a talk-back function that lets mothers soothe bub without getting out of bed. The unit also features temperature and humidity alarms, a calming night light and an LCD screen.

COLOURFUL CAMERA

Smooth like a pebble, but sophisticated, this compact camera has a lot to offer. The third model in Fujifilm's glamorous Z Series range is a 10-megapixel shooter that comes with a 3x optical zoom, face detection and picture stabilisation technology, as well as a new Scene Recognition Auto mode that chooses the best of six scene settings to suit your photo, including Portrait, Landscape, Night and Macro. The camera, which comes in metallic shades of pink, purple, black, white and orange, also features a Dual Blog Mode for posting photos on the web, self-timer modes for couple and group photos, and a 2.7in LCD screen.

VIRTUAL EXERCISE EQUIPMENT

Mothers who like to keep themselves fit, virtually, could benefit from Bluemouth's latest fitness accessories. The company's latest releases are designed to work with the Nintendo Wii Fit game and console. They include Everlast 1kg Dumbbells that fit around your Wii Remote and Nunchuck controller to give your virtual workout a resistance boost, and Everlast Aerobic Step-Up that fits on to the Wii Fit Balance Board to get you taking the virtual stairs.

PHOTOS ON CANVAS

Turning favourite family photographs into a wall-friendly artwork is not as hard as you might think. Users simply open the web page which has Photos on canvas, upload a photo of at least 2 megapixels, choose a colour treatment (eg. black and white, soft, sepia or original), and arrange and resize the photo to suit the canvas. Photos are printed on stretches canvas in sizes as small as 40cmx30cm and as large as 150cmx101cm to really take over a wall.
