New York Yankees stadium

The opening of the new $1.5 billion Yankee Stadium in New York.

Former catcher Yogi Berra tossed the ceremonial first pitch and Babe Ruth's bat was laid across home plate to mark the opening of the new $1.5 billion Yankee Stadium. Picture: GETTY/AP

A sellout crowd of 48,271 turned out to see the first game at the Yankees' new home. Picture: GETTY

As fans arrived — many of them more than three hours before the first pitch — they walked past the old stadium. “The House that Ruth Built” sits just across the street, empty but not forgotten. Picture: AP

"It’s kind of a melancholy feeling, especially walking by and seeing it start to be torn down,” one fan said. “But then you walk in here and you sit in your seats, you feel like you’re in the same ballpark. It’s really amazing". Picture: AP

Monument Park, which immortalizes Yankee greats and top events, was moved from the old stadium to just beyond the centre-field fence. Field-level concourses at the new stadium are lined with oversized photographs of top moments from the Yankees’ record 26 championship seasons. Picture: REUTERS

The new stadium has many touches from the "House that Ruth Built," with the same field dimensions and look, topped by the familiar facade circling the upper deck. Picture: AP

"This is Yankee Stadium now,” said another fan. “Wherever the Yankees play, there’s a mystique around them and it’ll reside here now". Picture: GETTY

Much of the talk about the new stadium centered on the $2,625 single-game price of 100 select seats behind home plate and comments by Yankees managing general partner Hal Steinbrenner that the team might have overcharged for some tickets during the worst recession in 70 years. Picture: GETTY

"I do think the prices are probably too high for most people,” said one Yankees fan. Yet as he said it, he couldn’t stop smiling as he looked around the new stadium. Picture: GETTY

There was great expectation for the Yankees' first game at the new stadium. Picture: AP

Celebrities like Jay-Z were in the crowd. Picture: REUTERS

But the Yankees opened Major League Baseball's newest and priciest ballpark with an embarrassing 10-2 loss to the Cleveland Indians. Picture: AP
