Take a space walk with US astronauts in our photo gallery

A nearly full moon sets as the space shuttle Discovery sits atop Launch pad 39A at the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida, March 11. Discovery was prepared for launch on Wednesday on a mission to finish installing the International Space Station's power system and deliver Japan's first live-aboard crew member. uz escape vehicle docked with the International Space Station. The Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, reported March 12 that the crew of the ISS was evacuated to Soyuz as a precautionaery measure after it was discovered that space debris presented a danger to the station. The center later announced an all-clear once the ISS had passed the debris field. a session of extravehicular activity to perform maintenance on the International Space Station. During the 4-hour, 49-minute spacewalk, Fincke and cosmonaut Yury Lonchakov (out of frame) reinstalled the Exposing Specimens of Organic and Biological Materials to Open Space (Expose-R) experiment on the universal science platform mounted to the exterior of the Zvezda Service Module. The spacewalkers also removed straps, or tape, from the area of the docking target on the Pirs airlock and docking compartment.

In this image provided by NASA, Astronaut Richard Arnold participates in the mission's first scheduled spacewalk to connect the S6 truss segment to the International Space Station on March 19, 2009. The blackness of space and Earth's horizon provide the backdrop for the scene. On Saturday afternoon, astronauts Steven Swanson and Joseph Acaba are scheduled to float out of the linked space station and shuttle to do some chores that will ease the burden for future spacewalkers.
