Năm 2009 là năm người Tây Tạng kỷ niệm chính phủ lưu vong cũng như kỷ niệm một cuộc kháng chiến chống bạo động vừa tròn năm mươi năm.
Nhân mùa Phật đản sắp đến, thử nhìn về một xứ sở Phật giáo mà tên tuổi của vị lãnh đạo tinh thần đã được nhắc đến nhờ ở biểu tượng nhân quyền và lòng từ bi trên khắp thế giới.
Đức Dalai Lama TENZIN GOASO đã chính thức đăng quang là người lãnh đạo tại Tây Tạng vào ngày 17/10/1959 tại thủ đô Lhasa, khi ngài lên 17.
Thời điểm này, Trung Cộng đã chiếm đóng phần lớn đất đai của họ. Tuy vậy những năm kế tiếp, dù đã có nhiều thỏa hiệp - Trung cộng vẫn không tôn trọng với mưu cầu chiếm toàn bộ xứ sở này.
Vào mùa Xuân năm 1959, Trung Cộng đã chiếm hẳn thủ đô Lhasa bằng vũ lực và bằng âm mưu chiêu dụ, mong bắt cóc Ngài.
Trước tình thế bắt buộc, Dalai Lama đành phải rời bỏ thủ đô Lhasa cùng với phái đoàn tùy tùng đến Ấn độ, một biên giới kề cận.
Thời gian này, quốc hội Ấn đã chấp nhận cho Dalai Lama trú ngụ và thành lập chính phủ lưu vong tại khu vực Dharamsala.
Trong năm mươi năm định cư tại Ấn, uy tín và đức độ của Ngài đã tỏa rộng trên toàn thế giới nhờ vào chủ trương tạo một thế giới thanh bình trong tinh thần hòa dịu những xung đột và hòa đồng mọi tôn giáo, lấy từ bi làm gốc.
Vào năm 2008, trong một cuộc trưng cầu ý kiến của ngành truyền thông tại Pháp, Dalai Lama đã được ca ngợi là vị lãnh đạo tinh thần có uy tín nhất vì sự cảm hóa của Ngài đến với tha nhân.
Để trả lời cho câu hỏi: "Điều gì làm Ngài ngạc nhiên nhất ở nhân loại?"
Câu trả lời là: "Con Người. Bởi vì con người phung phí sức khỏe để tích lũy tiền của, rồi lại bỏ tiền ra để mua lại sức khỏe.
Vì quá lo nghĩ cho tương lai, con người quên mất hiện tại, đến nỗi không sống với hiện tại lẫn tương lai.
Con người sống như thể không bao giờ chết. Nhưng rồi sẽ chết như chưa bao giờ từng sống.
