Judges at this years’ Crufts are under orders to remove unhealthy animals as part of a campaign by the Kennel Club to save pedigree dog showing from extinction

In an attempt to salvage its reputation, the Kennel Club has recruited a team of 20 show monitors to scrutinise the judges’ decisions on breeds deemed to be at risk from health problems
A dog and its owner arrive for the show. Fourteen breeds deemed to be at risk from health problems are: basset hound, bloodhound, bulldog, chow chow, clumber spaniel, dogue de Bordeaux, French bulldog, German shepherd, mastiff, Neapolitan mastiff, pekingese, pug, St Bernard and shar-pei
Judges have been sent new rules on evaluating the dogs, and will be briefed on potential pitfalls presented by each breed
A Gordon Setter, a breed used to highlight ’healthy breeding’ at the show, jumps through the undergrowth. Dogs will be banned if they show signs of sickness such as lameness, shortness of breath, refusal to be handled, timidity or aggression

The Kennel Club is expecting about 160,000 visitors to see 28,000 dogs over the four days
