NASA's Ares I-X rocket
Nasa successfully launched its newest spacecraft - one that it hopes will help return man to the Moon. The Ares I-X blasted off from Cape Canaveral in Florida at 3.30pm GMT with an unmanned dummy stage attached to a rocket
The Ares I-X, the largest rocket in the world at 327ft, has been four years in the making
The launch was a day late after being postponed because of concerns over upper-level winds and cloud static
The prototype rocket is the first crew spacecraft to be rolled out by Nasa in 30 years
Manned launches are planned to begin in 2015, when astronauts will be carried in a capsule known as Orion stacked on the top of the rocket
The project could yet be scrapped, however. A White House-appointed review panel has suggested that Ares be abandoned in favour of cheaper, commercially built boosters
After a minute of flight, taking Ares 28 miles high at speeds of up to 3,000mph, the dummy section broke away from the rocket in a planned separation
The former Apollo astronaut Al Worden was at the Kennedy Space Centre for the launch. Mr Worden was the command module pilot for the Apollo 15 Moon mission in 1971
Sensors in the recovered sections of the rocket - which landed in the Atlantic - will be used by Nasa scientists to evaluate the success of the $455 million test
